My friend's kid called me out on my fantasy world building
I was telling my buddy's 10 year old daughter about the kingdom in my story where everyone uses magic for everything. She just looked at me and said "but who grows the food then?" and I had no answer. It hit me that I've been making these big epic worlds for years without thinking about the boring everyday stuff like farming or plumbing. Made me totally rethink how I approach world building now. Anybody else get humbled by someone way younger?

The kid being sharp" gets me thinking about how kids always ask the REAL questions. My nephew once asked why my fantasy city didn't have any TRASH, and I froze for a solid minute before admitting I just never thought about it. Now every kingdom I build has a whole garbage collection guild just to cover my bases.

Wait, am I the only one who used to think complex magic systems made a world feel complete? @matthewmartin is totally right about that kid being sharp, because it took me way too long to realize the boring stuff like food production and waste management is what makes a fantasy world feel REAL. Honestly, that question about who grows the food has stuck with me and I've started asking the same thing about my own kingdoms now.
