My writing prompt about a missing cat turned into a novel outline last month
Last month I was stuck on a writing prompt about a cat that goes missing and comes back acting different. I figured it would be a short story, maybe 5 pages max. But then I started asking why the cat changed, and suddenly I had a whole plot about parallel dimensions and a scientist who swapped pets with her alternate self. It ballooned into a 30 chapter outline over two weeks. Has anyone else had a simple prompt suddenly explode into something way bigger than you planned?

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I tried to write a 200 word flash fiction about a haunted spoon. Three months later I had a 450 page manuscript about a cursed silverware collection that toppled a royal dynasty. Still not sure what happened.

Wait, was the spoon actually haunted, or just cursed?

Three months later I had a 450 page manuscript" made me laugh because that's how life works sometimes. You sit down to do one small thing and next thing you know you're knee deep in something way bigger than you planned. It's like when I just meant to organize one shelf in the garage and ended up rearranging the whole house, right?
