Somebody in my writers group read their prompt out loud and got 3 pages out of it, here's why that bugs me
Was at my writers group meetup in Portland two nights ago and this guy read a prompt straight off a random blog, like word for word, and got a packed room to give him three pages of stuff while my original prompt went nowhere. The prompt was just 'a person finds a locked door' and his whole thing was that he didn't explain it, he just read it slow and let everyone sit there for 10 seconds before speaking again. So my question is, do you all write your prompts to be read out loud or just to look good on a screen, because I clearly have been doing it wrong.
Wait, he just read the prompt word for word off some random blog and that was it? That is wild to me. And then the whole trick was just... pausing? Like he didn't add anything or explain it, he just let the silence do the work? Honestly that feels kinda like a magic trick more than actual writing. I get that delivery matters when you read out loud but three pages from ten seconds of dead air seems nuts. Maybe I need to start timing my pauses instead of rewriting my prompts.
