The day I stopped forcing my characters through a plot outline
For years I swore by detailed chapter outlines. I'd spend a week mapping every beat before writing a single word. Then last November I tried a different approach on a short story. I just wrote the opening scene and let the main character decide where to go next. The result was a story that actually surprised me. My outlines always felt stiff and predictable. Writing without one felt messy but the dialogue came out natural. Has anyone else found that letting go of the outline led to better scenes? Or am I just bad at planning?

Read somewhere that discovery writers have way more fun with their first drafts.

Letting the characters lead fixed everything for my writing too.
