The week my compost pile saved me $60 on fertilizer

I started a compost bin last spring (mostly just to stop my kitchen scraps from smelling) and by August I had enough dark, crumbly soil to fill three raised beds. Then a hard frost hit in October and everything died back, which made me wonder if the whole thing was even worth the effort. Would you stick with a system that pays off slowly like that, or would you just buy the bagged stuff and call it a day?

Stick with it, @dixon.iris is right - your dirt doesn't come with a receipt.

Oh man, that's the truth. Once you've grown stuff in your own dirt you can't go back to the bagged stuff, it just feels wrong. I swear my soil gets better every year even when the plants have a rough season.

Composting really does feel like a slow burn but it adds up fast, especially when you start counting the bags you don't have to buy. I started mine two years ago and honestly thought I was just making a fancy trash can for worms. Then last spring I spread it around my tomatoes and they went nuts compared to the ones I bought. The frost thing is real though, I lost a lot of stuff last October too and it stings. But the soil underneath is still good, it just needs a little time to break down more over winter. I say stick with it, the feeling of using your own dirt is way better than opening a bag from the store.
