Vent: My entire writing group hated my prompt about a sentient coffee machine, called it 'uninspired'

Honestly, it's just a writing prompt. They didn't like one idea, so what? It's not like they banned you from the group. A sentient coffee machine could be fun, but maybe it just wasn't for them. Write it anyway if you want to, or toss it out and try something new. Getting this worked up over a single critique seems like a lot.

What if the coffee machine was the only one who remembered the old world before the corporate takeover? Miles has a point about it just being one idea, but the group might have missed the real hook. A sentient appliance is a classic for a reason. The problem is usually in the execution, not the thing itself. You could have a barista who slowly realizes his machine is giving warnings instead of just brewing.

Totally agree with @parker183, the execution is everything. Got a similar note once on a story about a haunted GPS, where the feedback was just "silly." But when you dig into the small details, like it only giving directions to places that don't exist anymore, that's where the good stuff hides.
