A guy at the flea market in Reno told me to ditch my display case and let my old lighters get scratched up, and I'm still chewing on it
I've been collecting old Zippos and brass lighters for about 6 years now, and I keep them in a felt-lined case so nothing gets dinged. Last Saturday I was set up at the flea market off Wells Ave and this older guy, probably 70s, stopped to look. He picked one up, turned it over, and goes 'why are you hiding all the good marks?' He said the scratches and the dings are the story, and a mint lighter just means nobody ever used it. I've been thinking about that all week. Half of me gets it and half of me still wants the case. Do you all keep stuff pristine or let it show its age?
