Appreciation post: the coin dealer in Tulsa who gently explained I'd been cleaning my silver wrong for 6 years
I brought a handful of Mercury dimes into a shop on 15th Street last Saturday, proud of how shiny I'd gotten them with baking soda and foil. The guy behind the counter, Dale, picked one up, looked at it under his loupe for maybe 10 seconds, and said "son, you took about $400 off this pile." Turns out my little science experiment was stripping the tarnish collectors actually want, and some of those dimes were worth $30 each before I scrubbed them down to melt value. I sat in my truck for a while after that one. So now I'm wondering, how many of you learned a hard lesson about cleaning or restoring something in your collection? I'd rather hear it from you all than find out the slow way again.

Baking soda and foil turned a $30 key date into $3 of silver, and I did the same thing to a 1916-D Mercury back in 2009. Buy a $10 Red Book before you touch anything else, the prices for graded vs cleaned coins will make you sit in the truck again.
