I still remember my first comic book collection from 1983
It was a beat up copy of Uncanny X-Men #168 I got at a garage sale for 25 cents. Back then I kept everything in a cardboard box under my bed. Now I have bags, boards, and a climate controlled closet. My old stuff is all yellowed and brittle. Anyone else wish they knew how to take care of things back when they started?

My first comics ended up in a pile next to a leaky basement window. I found a copy of Secret Wars #8 that looks like someone used it as a coaster. The cover is stuck to page 3 from water damage. Paid a quarter for it back then, probably worth negative money now. At least future me will appreciate my current bagged and boarded X-Men books.

Changed my mind after seeing how much water damage can destroy them.

My buddy had the same problem with a stack of old Fantastic Fours. He started keeping them in those comic-specific plastic sleeves with the cardboard backers, plus he put a silica gel pack in his short box. That absorbed the moisture and stopped the pages from getting wavy. It's a cheap fix that saved what he had left.
