My grandpa's old coin box taught me something wild about 1964

I was sorting through his collection last weekend and found out that 1964 quarters have 90% silver in them, which is crazy because the next year they dropped to almost nothing. Did anyone else's family stash away a ton of silver change without telling them?

My dad did the EXACT same thing with old dimes and halves, just a whole drawer of them from before 1965. It's wild how many families have this hidden silver stash sitting around without anyone realizing the melt value now. Half of mine went straight to a local coin shop for some decent cash once I got them sorted.

Did you check the dates on them though? Most people overlook that only pre-1965 quarters have the silver, so if your grandpa had a mix it's not as big a deal as it sounds.
