Shoutout to the guy who proved me wrong about rubber bands
I always thought rubber bands were just rubber bands. Cheap and basic. But my buddy Mike collects vintage office supplies. He showed me his 1950s rubber band ball. 12 inches across. Different colors and thicknesses. Now I get it. The older ones have this stretch and snap that new ones just don't. He even let me snap one. Felt solid. Do you collect anything most people overlook?

Does the rubber actually feel different on those older ones? I've never thought about old office supplies before but now I'm curious. Mike sounds like a good friend for sharing that with you. It takes a special kind of patience to build a ball that big without it getting lumpy or uneven.

@dianaanderson i get what you mean about metal, but with rubber it's kind of the opposite. the older bands feel more dry and brittle, almost like they've lost all their oils over the years. i had a batch from the late 90s that crumbled when i tried to bend one, no joke. so you have to be really gentle when you're adding layers, one wrong pull and you've got a crack in your ball. mike's definitely got the patience of a saint for sticking with it that long without it getting wonky.

Yeah I started collecting old bottle openers and the feel of the metal is totally different.
