The "1973 Double Die" penny I almost threw in a vending machine

I was sorting through a jar of old coins my grandpa left me (you know, the kind you ignore for years) and found this 1973 penny that looked off. Looked it up online and apparently it's a known error - a "double die" where the lettering is slightly shifted. Turns out it's worth around $150 to $200 in decent shape, which blew my mind for something I almost spent on a soda at the gas station. Anyone else ever accidentally stumble on something valuable in a junk drawer?

So true @blair_webb, regular stuff can be hidden treasure if you pause.

Exactly. Most people are in too much of a hurry to actually look at what they've got. A quick search online before you dump anything is worth the two minutes it takes.

Dude no way, I literally just threw a handful of old pennies in a Coinstar last month without even looking at them. That's wild that a 1973 penny can be worth that much, I thought it was just the 1955 ones or whatever. $150-$200 for something that looks like a printing mistake is insane, I bet you double checked it like five times before you believed it. Now I gotta dig through my grandpa's old jars too before I accidentally cash in a goldmine for pocket lint.
