TIL my grandpa was right about pressing flowers in a phone book

My grandpa told me a few years back to use an old phone book instead of a heavy book for pressing flowers. I always thought he was just being stubborn about his 1987 Yellow Pages, (you know how old folks get). But last spring I pressed some daisies in a regular textbook and they came out all wrinkly, so I tried his way with 3 hydrangeas and they dried perfectly flat in 4 weeks. Anyone else have a weird family trick that actually works better than the modern way?

Nah, textbook paper absorbs moisture way better than glossy phone book pages.

The glossy pages don't soak up moisture like regular paper, so the flowers dry slower and keep their shape better. I've had the same problem with textbooks - they pull moisture too fast and the petals curl up. Grandpa's method kind of makes sense when you think about it, the phone book pages are basically non-porous so the flowers just flatten without losing water too quickly.
