TIL those old spice jars I hoarded make perfect mini terrariums
I've been collecting vintage spice jars (you know, the ones with the metal shaker tops) for about 3 years now. My husband kept asking why I needed 40 tiny glass containers. Then last weekend I tried planting a couple with moss and pebbles from our backyard in Des Moines. They actually look amazing on my windowsill. Each one holds maybe 2 tablespoons of dirt but the little ecosystems thrive. I thought they'd just be dust catchers but now I'm buying more jars just for this purpose. Has anyone else found a second life for their collection that surprised them?

Oh wow, I actually just read an article about how the salt can mess up the soil over time... and not in a good way. @the_william, did yours ever start leaking salt water or anything weird like that?

Did you try rinsing the salt shakers before putting them near the plants?
