A coworker's simple password trick finally clicked for me

So last week my buddy at the office was resetting his router and muttered something about how he builds passwords from a phrase instead of a word. I always used those random letter strings, but then I'd forget them and have to reset everything twice a month. He showed me his method: pick a sentence like 'my dog ate my homework in 2019' and use the first letter of each word plus the year, like 'mdamhi19'. It's not bulletproof by any means, but it's way easier to remember and still looks like gibberish to a casual observer. I switched my email and bank logins over to that style yesterday, took me about 20 minutes total. Anyone else use a phrase-based system or have a better trick for keeping strong passwords without a manager app?
