Had to pick between a free VPN and paying for one for my home office.

That's a common view, but it misses some good options. My experience with a couple free services has been fine for basic home office stuff. The key is just doing a bit of research on the company first.

My cousin in Chicago got his bank account flagged for fraud last year. The bank traced it back to him using a free VPN that was routing his traffic through some sketchy server farm overseas. Tbh he spent months dealing with the paperwork to get his money back.

Seriously, you get what you pay for with that stuff. I read a tech article that said free VPNs often make money by selling your data. Just spend the few bucks for a real one and sleep better.
