Hot take: I had to choose between a free antivirus and a paid one after a scare
Last month I got hit with a weird popup while browsing a recipe site, and it freaked me out. My free antivirus caught nothing, but my buddy swears by a cheap paid option that he says stopped a ransomware attack in 2022. I went with the paid one for $30 a year, and so far my PC feels faster and I haven't seen a single alert. Anyone else make this switch and notice a big difference, or is it mostly hype?

Stick with the paid one for a year and see how it feels. I tried free stuff for years and always ended up with slowdowns or weird alerts, but since switching to a cheap paid option I haven't had a single issue. That $30 is basically insurance against the headache of a full system cleanup.

Right, couldn't agree more. I'm the same way, got tired of free stuff throwing up fake alerts and slowing everything down, now I just pay the small fee and never think about it.

My buddy Mark had the same thing happen last year. He was on a torrent site for some old TV show and got hit with a fake virus alert that locked his screen. His free antivirus didn't even blink. He ended up paying $40 to a local repair shop to fix it, which was more than the $30 he could have spent on a cheap paid option. After that he signed up for one and says his computer hasn't been the same since. Way smoother, and he hasn't had a single scare in 8 months now.
