Last week my old tablet got hit with ransomware and I almost lost everything

I was backing up photos from a camping trip 3 years ago when a popup froze my screen. Thought it was a glitch at first. Took it to a shop on Main Street and they said it was a crypto locker. Had no backup since February. Cost me $150 to get the files back. Do most people actually keep backups or just hope it never happens?

Got hit with ransomware on my laptop last year. Same thing, thought it was just a weird popup until my files started turning into weird gibberish text names. Had to pay a guy $200 to get my tax returns back. Most people I know just hope it never happens, I'm the only one who learned my lesson and now does weekly backups.

Honestly, isn't that how most people learn the hard way though? We all go through life thinking bad stuff only happens to other people until it hits us square in the face. Tbh, it's kinda like how nobody checks their tire pressure until they're stranded on the side of the road.

Man, that's rough. Nothing like losing your own files to wake you up to what really matters. At least you got out of it for only $200, could have been a lot worse.
