MFA app vs. text codes - which one do you trust more?

I had to pick between using an authenticator app and SMS codes for my work login last month. I went with the app option because of all the SIM swap horror stories I've read about on Reddit. So far it's been smooth, but my coworker in Denver swears SMS is fine and says apps are overkill. Has anyone here actually had a bad experience with text-based codes?

Stuck with the app after my buddy got his texts hijacked and lost his Instagram account.

Read @derek_perez's example and that's exactly why I went with the app too. I saw a report last year saying SMS codes are way easier to intercept than people realize. Not worth the risk for something that takes ten seconds to set up.
