Question about those $200 "security" courses I paid for online, did I just get scammed?
So about 6 months ago I got worried about my home network after a router alert and dropped $200 on a "complete home cybersecurity bootcamp" from some guy on YouTube with a nice studio setup. The first module was decent, mostly explaining WPA3 and why you should change your default admin password, stuff I could have read for free. But then he spent three hours showing us how to install a VPN he was clearly getting a cut from, and the "advanced" section was just him reading his own slides about phishing emails. I spent maybe 12 hours on it and the only thing I got out of it was learning to turn off remote access on my router, which the manual told me anyway. A friend who works IT at a hospital in Des Moines told me he could have walked me through all of it in one evening over coffee. Has anyone here actually paid for a course that was worth it, or is free stuff like the CISA guides and YouTube channels the way to go?

I paid for a similar course a few years back and the highlight was learning I already had my router set up right. The free stuff from CISA and channels like NetworkChuck will teach you more in a weekend than that guy did in six months. Your IT friend over coffee sounds like the best deal going, and it comes with actual conversation instead of a sales pitch for NordVPN.
