Ransomware hit my small plumbing business last Tuesday
A sketchy email attachment from a fake supplier locked up all my job estimates and client files, and I ended up paying $600 in Bitcoin to get them back because my backup drive was sitting in a truck that got flooded the week before - has anyone else had a close call like that or found a decent backup system that actually works?

The 3-2-1 rule works, I use a cheap cloud service for mine.

The $600 payment probably felt like the only option at that point, but paying ransomware usually just funds more attacks. A flooded backup drive is rough, but having a second copy stored offsite in a waterproof case or cloud storage would have saved you. Look into a 3-2-1 backup rule where you keep three copies, two different media types, and one stored away from your main office.

$600 is annoying but honestly not that bad for a business lesson. @kim_johnson51 is acting like you funded a whole crime ring, but most ransomware groups aren't big operations, they're just scammers in it for quick cash.
