The coffee shop I frequent has no guest WiFi, is that smart or overkill?

I went to Brew House on 5th yesterday and noticed they have zero public WiFi. Owner told me he thinks open networks are a huge risk for customer data. Isn't that going too far though, or is he onto something with keeping everyone on cellular data?

Actually most data theft happens through fake login pages that look legit, not just being on an open network. He's smart to worry but disabling WiFi altogether might be a little much since VPNs handle that risk pretty well.

Owner's not wrong, plenty of scammers sit in coffee shops just waiting on open networks to grab info.
