TIL the "weird" sign on my banking app was real, and I almost got my account drained over $8
A guy called claiming to be my bank's fraud team about a suspicious $8 charge and wanted my one time code, and I almost gave it to him because the caller ID looked right. I hung up and called the number on the back of my card, and the rep said that code was the only thing keeping him out of my account. So how do you all tell a fake fraud call from the real thing when the number on your screen actually matches your bank?
But banks DO call people about fraud all the time, so telling folks to just never trust a call and always hang up means real fraud alerts get missed and people lose money that way too. Honestly the whole "they'll never ask for your code" line feels like something banks say so they can blame you when their caller ID system gets spoofed.
