Appreciation post for the bus driver who let me ride free after my card failed

Yesterday my transit card stopped working on the bus and I only had a $20 bill, but the driver just waved me on after I showed her the card glitching. I looked up the policy later and apparently each driver can use their own judgment up to $5 in fare forgiveness per day, which is way more generous than I expected. Do other transit systems let drivers make those calls or is this just a local thing?

@adamk95 pretty much nailed it with that take.

i mean it's cool that she did that but honestly i wonder how much of that "$5 per day" policy actually gets used versus drivers just being scared of getting in trouble. like is there a quota or do they have to log every time they let someone slide? because if i was a driver i'd probably just wave people on all the time to avoid arguments but then get written up for it. idk, maybe it's just me but i feel like those policies sound nice on paper but in practice they probably vary a ton driver to driver

Yeah, you're probably right about that. It's one thing to have a nice policy on paper, but another thing entirely for a driver to actually feel safe using it without worrying about getting in trouble later. I bet a lot of them just play it safe and collect the fine to avoid any paperwork hassle.
