DAE hit 500 bus rides on the 42 route and feel weird about it
I checked my transit app this morning and it said I've taken 500 rides on the 42 bus since I moved to Portland two years ago. That number hit me harder than I expected, mostly because it means I've spent around 250 hours just sitting on that one route. I used to swear I'd never be a bus person, I was all about driving everywhere. Now I know half the morning drivers by name and one of them, Marcus, saves me a seat if he sees me running. Anyone else keep track of their commute numbers like this?
That milestone hits different because transit time is the one part of your day where you're just a passenger in every sense. Most people never add up those hours, so seeing 250 laid out in front of you makes you really look at how you spend your life. The friendships with drivers like Marcus might be the best part of it, since that kind of small daily bond is hard to find anywhere else.
