Had to pick between the bus or biking to work this morning
My car broke down last night so I had to decide between taking the bus for $3 or biking 8 miles in the rain. I chose the bus because I didn't want to show up soaked, but then the bus got stuck in traffic for 45 minutes and I was still late. Has anyone else had a commute choice backfire on them like this?

Tbh that's just how life works sometimes. You try to pick the least worst option and the universe laughs at you. I've noticed this pattern keeps showing up everywhere - like when you leave early to beat traffic but then hit every single red light, or when you buy the expensive brand because it's supposed to last longer and it breaks first week. It's like the world has this weird sense of humor where your best laid plans get wrecked by some tiny detail you couldn't have seen coming.

Man, that sucks when you try to make the smart call and it still bites you.

Pat_fisher24 nailed it with the red light example. There's this thing called "attempted avoidance bias" where your brain thinks planning ahead should guarantee a result, but reality doesn't work that way. I read a study once that said people who try to avoid bad outcomes actually feel worse when things go wrong than people who just roll with it. The system punishes the effort, not the result.
