I finally saw why people hate the subway during a heatwave

I was stuck on the F train near Brooklyn last Tuesday when the AC died, and this guy next to me just started peeling off his shirt like it was a beach day. Had to stand there for 25 minutes in that sweatbox, has anyone else dealt with a total AC failure on a packed train?

Heard this exact story from my friend Rachel who takes the 4 train every day. She said the AC went out during rush hour and this grown man in a suit actually started fanning himself with his briefs he yanked out of his bag. She had to press her face against the window just to get some air from the outside, said it felt like being in a slow cooker for 30 minutes. I told her next time just hop off at the next stop and wait for the next train, even if it means being late. Honestly the MTA should have backup fans or something, but that's probably asking too much.

Honestly just get off at the next stop, not worth cooking alive.

Oh come on, is it really that bad though? People act like the subway is some kind of torture chamber when the AC cuts out. It's hot for maybe 10 minutes until the next stop, and then you're back in the fresh air. I've been on trains where the lights flickered and the doors wouldn't close, and nobody was screaming to abandon ship. Plus, hopping off means you're stuck waiting on a platform that's probably even hotter with no breeze. Maybe some folks just need to toughen up a little instead of acting like a broken AC is a crisis.
