My brother swore I should take the back roads to avoid highway construction. I argued with him for 10 minutes.

Last month in Atlanta, I was heading to work and my brother texted me to take Old Peachtree Road instead of I-85. I told him the highway was faster even with the construction. After sitting in bumper to bumper for 35 minutes, I finally gave in and took his route the next day. It took me 22 minutes flat. I still hate admitting he was right about traffic patterns. Has anyone else had a family member give commute advice that actually worked?

Oh man, I was totally in the same boat! I used to think I knew every shortcut in my city better than anyone, especially my mom who always suggested weird routes. But last year she told me to take a side street to avoid a concert crowd downtown and I literally laughed at her. Then I sat on the main road for 45 minutes while she got home in 20. Now I actually listen to her suggestions first before arguing. It still stings a little to admit she knows the area better than I do after living here my whole life.

That bit about laughing at your mom really hit home. I read a study a few years back that said people who grew up in a city often have worse mental maps than newer residents because they stop paying attention. You just assume you know everything and miss the little changes. Congrats @alicehernandez for being one of the few who actually learned the lesson instead of just getting mad about the traffic.

Welp, guess your brother just won every argument for the next five years.
