Rode the 7 train through Queens last week and everyone was silent. Not normal.

Yeah, that "not normal" part got me. The 7 train usually has at least some kind of life to it, even if it's just someone's phone on speaker or a guy humming. I've noticed the same thing on the F lately. People just stare at their shoes like they're trying to disappear. It kind of bums me out. @anthony129 your approach of saying good morning and nodding is actually a good reminder, maybe we all need to just break that wall of silence sometimes before it gets even worse.

Started just saying "good morning" to the person next to me on the R train a few months back. Now I make it a point to at least nod or give a little smile to folks when I get on, and some people actually loosen up and chat for a stop or two.

And that little smile or nod is contagious too. Once one person breaks the ice, the whole car relaxes a bit.
