That one guy on the 7:15 bus who changed how I see things

There's this older dude I call Frank who rides the 7:15 bus into Portland every day. He told me last week he counts the license plates of cars stuck in traffic and guesses where they're from. Just a little game he plays to pass the time. Ever have a stranger drop a random habit on you that stuck in your head for days?

Oh man, I definitely used to write off random habits like that as just weirdness, but this actually makes me see them differently now. It's kind of amazing how a simple game can turn dead time into something you almost look forward to.

@grant.felix you're totally right, it's like those little things become a whole new lens for the day. Been noticing that more and more lately, how people find these tiny pockets of joy or meaning in the most boring spots. Like Frank with his plates or that woman at my coffee shop who always guesses how many beans are in each scoop before she pours them, it's just this quiet reminder that even the deadest time can get a second life if you let it.

My coffee shop has this guy Jerry who always counts how many times the door chime rings during his shift and tries to match it to the day's date. That Frank license plate thing and Jerry's door chime thing got me thinking about how most people are just running these quiet little games inside their heads to beat the boredom. Once you start noticing it, you see it everywhere, like a hidden layer to everyone's day that nobody talks about. Makes you wonder what other small tricks people use just to keep themselves going through the daily grind.
