I finally ditched the harness for a plain collar on city walks

Everyone in my building swears by those padded no-pull harnesses, but my 60 pound shepherd mix just dragged harder with it on. I switched to a basic flat collar last Tuesday and she actually walks loose now, which makes zero sense to me. Has anyone else found that the simple option beats the fancy gear for their dog?

...and honestly, I think the harness gave my dog something to brace against. Like she felt the pressure on her chest and shoulders and her instinct was to push into it. With the plain collar, there's no leverage point, so she just gives up and walks next to me. My buddy's dog is the exact opposite though, he's got a skinny neck and a collar makes him cough, so he needs the harness. It really depends on the dog's build and personality. Maybe try the collar for another week and see if it sticks, but don't toss the harness yet, you might need it for the car or the vet.
