My dog's flexi leash snapped on a walk in Denver and the handle hit a jogger in the ankle
So last Thursday I was walking my coonhound Rufus around City Park in Denver, and about 10 minutes in his flexi leash just exploded. The cord had a fray in it I never noticed, and when Rufus bolted after a squirrel the whole thing snapped and the plastic handle went flying backward. It hit some guy jogging behind us right in the ankle, hard enough that he yelped and hopped around. I felt awful and kept apologizing while Rufus just stood there with half a leash dragging, looking at me like I did something wrong. The guy was cool about it and said he was fine, but I could tell it stung. I walked home with Rufus on a regular 6 foot leash and ordered a new one that night. Now I check the cord every single time before we leave. Has anyone else had a leash fail like that, and did you switch to a totally different kind after?
I used to figure flexi leashes were fine for easy walks and only bad in theory. Then a friend's cord zipped across my calf on a trail and left a burn that took weeks to heal, and now I see why people hate them. Retractable cords store up a lot of force, so when they go, they really go.
