Saw a guy trying to use a retractable leash on a busy road today

I was walking my lab Miles down Oak Avenue this morning and this dude had his little terrier on one of those thin retractable leashes near the curb. The dog darted into the street after a pigeon and the line snapped on contact with a parked car's tire. Lucky nobody got hit. I switched to a standard 6-foot nylon leash about 5 years ago after my own close call and I won't go back. Has anyone else had a retractable leash fail on them?

My buddy Dave lost control of one of those retractable leashes with his golden retriever at the park a couple years back. The handle jammed when the dog took off and he ended up with a nasty rope burn on his palm. Switched to a standard leash the next day.

Oh man, I've seen that exact thing happen at the dog park more times than I can count... nothing like watching someone get dragged across the grass by their own dog because that little plastic handle decides to betray them. Bet your buddy Dave's palm looked like he tried to arm wrestle a lawnmower cord after that. Honestly, those retractable leashes are basically just a lawsuit waiting to happen on a thin piece of string.
