Switched to a retractable leash after 5 years of hating on them

Was at the park near my house last Tuesday. Saw this older guy with a golden retriever on a long Flexi. Dog was wandering around sniffing bushes, guy was just standing there drinking coffee. Not pulling, not tangled, just chill. My dog always pulls on a standard 6ft leash. Tried the retractable on a recommendation from the pet store clerk. First walk was rough but now I get it. Do most people here use retractable or standard?

Yeah I get what you're saying about them teaching pulling. That happened to me at first actually. My dog would hit the end of the line and just keep leaning into it. But I started locking it short for walks and only giving her the full length when we're in open spaces with no other dogs nearby. Made a huge difference. Now she knows locked means we're working and free means she can explore. The key is not letting them walk around with constant tension on the cord.

Actually it's not the leash itself that teaches pulling, it's how people use them. The locking mechanism is the key part people miss. You're right that constant tension is the problem, not the retractable design. If you let the cord stay tight all the time the dog learns that's normal. But locking it short for walks and unlocking for open areas creates clear rules. A lot of people just let the cord hang loose or stay locked the whole time and then blame the tool. It works fine if you manage it right.

Retractable leashes just teach dogs to pull more in my experience.
