The day I chose the old dirt trail over the new paved path

I always take my dog, Rusty, on this one loop near the river... but last month they added this smooth, wide paved path that everyone's raving about. I stuck with the old dirt trail though, even after Rusty pulled toward the new one. By the end, his paws were caked in mud and I had to pick burrs out of his tail for fifteen minutes... but he was happier rolling in that dust than he ever is on concrete. Has anyone else stuck with a beat-up old walking spot even when a nicer option showed up?

Totally feel you on this. I've got this cracked, uneven path behind the old mill that the city keeps threatening to rip out, and my husky goes nuts for all the random smells and mud puddles there, concrete just doesn't do it for her either. Did Rusty give you any trouble when you first walked past the new path?

Oh man, it's funny how that works with dogs and the raw messy stuff over clean flat surfaces. I've noticed this pattern with my own pup too, she'll pick a gnarly ditch over a smooth sidewalk every time just for the adventure of it. Maybe that's just how they keep us grounded in the real world, reminding us that the imperfect stuff is way more interesting than what we try to smooth over.
