The retractable leash I swore by finally betrayed me

I used the same retractable leash for 4 years in Austin, but last Tuesday the lock gave out at the worst time and my dog bolted toward a busy street. I caught him by the handle just in time, but I've switched to a fixed 6-foot leash and honestly won't go back. Has anyone else had a scary moment like this that made them change gear?
