Had to eat crow about hand-stitching after 3 years of machine-only

I always said hand-stitching was a waste of time when a machine does it in 2 minutes flat. Then I tried it on a leather wallet for my dad's 60th birthday, took 4 evenings of watching YouTube tutorials from a guy in Portland. The stitches held up way better after I dropped it in a puddle, the machine ones rusted and snapped. Has anyone else had a similar stubborn switch on a basic technique?
