I finally figured out why my cross stitch was puckering so bad
Read a post from an old embroidery forum where someone said to use a hoop with a screw tension, not the spring kind. Switched to a 10 inch wooden hoop last night and my fabric stayed flat as a board for the first time in months. Anybody else fight with puckering or am I the only one who didn't know this trick?

The spring hoops are actually fine if you wrap the inner ring with twill tape first.

Oh my goodness, the twill tape thing! I've been using those spring hoops for years and never once thought of that. That is such a simple trick I can't believe it never crossed my mind.
