My cross stitch used to be all gray outlines, now I fill color as I go

I spent two years doing every outline first because my mom said it kept stitches even, but I switched in January after a woman at the Mesa library craft night said she picks colors as she finishes each flower. Now my 8 inch hoop of poppies is halfway done instead of sitting in a drawer for 14 months. Does anyone else stitch one color at a time or do you jump around like me now?
