My wife said use the $9 plastic crochet hook, I used the $4 aluminum one, and I regret nothing
I got into crochet about 5 months ago and I was fighting my yarn the whole time, splitting it, losing loops, the works. My wife kept saying spend the $9 on the fancy ergonomic hook because her hands cramp up, but I went with a plain $4 aluminum hook from the craft store in Tulsa instead. Turns out the yarn slides way better on the metal and I finished a whole scarf in 3 days, which is fast for me. The hook has nothing to do with hand pain for me, it was all about the glide. Has anyone else found cheaper tools actually work better for their grip?
What yarn are you using though? Honestly I feel like the hook material matters way less than what the yarn is made of and how tight you hold the tension. Cotton drags on everything, acrylic slides on metal like butter, and some wool blends grab no matter what hook you buy. So the "cheap hook works better" thing might just mean bare aluminum fits how you crochet, not that price has anything to do with it. Tbh I'd bet if you tried the same yarn on a plastic hook and a metal one blindfolded, you'd feel the metal win every time.
Emma I would've argued with you a month ago but I tested exactly what you said last weekend with a skein of Red Heart and a wooden hook from my wife's stash and the metal one won hands down, no blindfold needed. I figured price meant quality so the cheap aluminum had to be junk but it turned out my whole problem was the plastic hook dragging on the acrylic the entire time. The blindfold thing made me laugh because at this point I'd put money on the metal too.
