My yarn winder saga ended with a cardboard tube and a drill

I kept buying those expensive cake winders and every single one of them would jam up on thick yarn. After ruining 3 skeins in a row last Tuesday, I grabbed a PVC pipe, an old hand drill, and some duct tape. It winds a bit lopsided but it WORKS and it cost me zero dollars. Does anyone else have a janky DIY fix that beat the store bought version?

Duct tape and a drill, now that's the spirit! I had a similar meltdown with my store bought swift and just gave up completely. Ended up using two chairs, a broom handle, and a very patient cat to hold the yarn while I wound it by hand into a giant ball. It took like two hours and the ball was more oval than round, but it did the job and I felt like a genius. The fancy tools just sit in my closet now, collecting dust and mocking me. Sometimes the garbage solution is the best solution.
