Old guy at the hardware store taught me to sharpen my own chisels 12 years ago
He was buying sandpaper and saw me staring at the new chisels. Said 'son, a dull tool is dangerous, learn to sharpen and you'll never buy another set.' I still use his method with a cheap oil stone. Anyone else have a random stranger change their hobby game?

Bought myself a cheap chisel set a few years back and immediately tried to sharpen them. Ngl, ended up with more nicks on the blade than when I started. Took me a whole afternoon and a lot of swearing before I figured out I was holding the angle wrong. Must have looked like a total clown in my garage. Honestly though, once you get it right, it's like magic.

Funny how it's always the cheap chisels that teach you the most about sharpening lol. You basically paid for a lesson in angles and pressure with that set. That's why I tell people starting out to grab a beat-up old chisel from a flea market instead of anything new, that way you can mess up bad without feeling the sting.
