The day I finally stopped buying cheap sketchbooks
Last summer I was at a little art supply shop in Portland and the owner talked me into spending $18 on a single sketchbook. I figured I'd be too scared to ruin it, but it actually made me slow down and think through each drawing instead of just scribbling.

Kind of disagree actually. Spending less on supplies lets me experiment without worrying about wasting money. If every page costs me 50 cents I feel free to draw garbage and learn from it. That expensive book just sounds like a trap for perfectionism. I'd rather fill up ten cheap notebooks with bad ideas than stare at one nice one.

Wait, did you try that Seawhite sketchbook from them? I picked up one of their big spiral ones a few months back and it totally changed how I draw. I mean, I was the same way at first, I was so scared to mess up the first page that I just stared at it for like a week. But once I finally put a line down, I noticed I actually stopped and looked at what I was drawing instead of just rushing through like I did with my 99 cent notebooks. It's weird how spending a little more on paper kind of forces you to respect your own work more.
