Did you try telling it with a delivery that builds up real slow? A buddy of mine told a dog joke at a family dinner once and my uncle @gavinb97 almost choked on his meatloaf laughing because he didn't see the punchline coming. My friend changed the setup so the dog was barking at the mailman but then the punchline was the mailman being his long lost brother or something weird like that. Everyone around the table went quiet for a second before cracking up. Might be worth messing with the structure a bit.

Read somewhere that dog humor is actually pretty common in standup routines because it's relatable. Heard this comedian say the mailman bit is like the "dad joke of pet jokes" basically. Your wife might have a point if she's hearing it on repeat though. Maybe switch it up with something about the dog judging your life choices instead.
