My buddy told me my guitar tone was too muddy and I got defensive at first

He said I needed to cut the bass below 80hz and roll off some mids on my amp, tried it last night and my riffs actually cut through the mix now instead of sounding like a wet blanket. Has anyone else had a friend call out something obvious you were totally blind to?

Read something in Guitar Player about how 80% of a guitar's "character" lives in that 800hz to 2k range, so cutting below that just makes room for the bass and kick drum. That "wet blanket" description hits hard because I spent years scooping my mids and wondering why I disappeared in a band mix. It's funny how a simple EQ change can make you feel like you're playing a whole different instrument.

Dude @carter.casey you just described my exact problem. I was all in on the scooped mids thing for years, thought that was the tone. First time I actually cut some lows and let that 1k area breathe I felt like an idiot for not trying it sooner.
