My cousin swore by duct tape for a cracked phone screen, 3 days later it got worse

So my cousin Mike told me last Tuesday to just slap some duct tape over the spider crack on my phone screen instead of paying $120 for a repair. I figured what the heck, it's cheap and he said he did it for months. Three days later the tape peeled off and took a chunk of glass with it, now there's a literal hole where my thumb swipes. The guy at the Verizon store in Columbus said I basically made it worse and now the LCD is going too. Has anyone else had a friend give horribly confident advice that backfired this bad or am I just cursed with bad relatives?
