PSA: That expensive 'waterproof' phone pouch I bought for the beach was a total scam

Took my new $35 phone pouch to Santa Monica beach last Saturday. I jumped in the water once, came back up, and my phone was already toast. Turns out the seal was fake and it filled up with saltwater instantly. Luckily I had a backup phone at home, but now I'm out $150 for a replacement screen. Has anyone else had a waterproof case fail on them?

Did you actually test it before going in the water, like with a paper towel inside or something? I've had cheap pouches work fine because I always check the seal first.

Wow, that's awful! I had almost the exact same thing happen with a similar pouch from a different brand. I tested mine in a sink full of water with a napkin inside and it was bone dry, but the moment I actually took it in the ocean, the seal just gave up and my phone was soaked in like 30 seconds. I think those things only work if you keep them perfectly flat and never move, which totally defeats the purpose of taking them in the water. Sorry you had to learn that lesson the hard way too.

13 phones drowned in my friend group before someone admitted they never actually tested theirs.
