Pro tip: Swap your old coffee mugs, not your favorite one

Last weekend I tried trading out my chipped mug collection at the local swap meet here in Portland. I grabbed like 8 mugs from my cupboard, ones I hadn't touched in a year. Turns out someone wanted my weird cat mug with the cracked handle, and I got a nice heavy ceramic one in return. But I almost threw in my daily driver, the one my sister gave me. Don't be me, keep the sentimental stuff out of the pile. Has anyone else regretted swapping something that meant more than it looked?

Oh man, I did this EXACT same thing but with a mug that had a thumb hole that fit PERFECTLY. I traded it for some generic "World's Best Dad" mug that broke in the dishwasher two weeks later. Now my morning coffee just doesn't feel right because my hand has nowhere to go. That stupid hole was my mug's SOUL and I gave it away like a chump. You'd think I'd learn after exchanging my lucky fishing hat for a cooler looking one that made me look like a total knob. Keep the sentimental ones locked in a safe if you have to.

Hold on a sec though, I gotta point something out. That mug with the thumb hole, was it actually a proper mug or one of those weird travel mugs that looks like a regular cup? Because I've seen people swear they're mugs but they're really just insulated cups with a lid that screws on. Either way, I feel your pain on losing that perfect fit. My brother did the same thing with a beat up old coffee cup from some gas station that had a perfect handle groove for his pinky finger. He traded it for a fancy ceramic one his girlfriend got him, and now he complains about it every single weekend when we do yard work together.
