DAE think the whole "change the oil every 3k miles" thing is way overblown?
Last week a young guy in the shop told me he still dumps his oil at 3,000 miles because his dad always did it. I looked at his service log: Rotella synthetic, mostly highway miles, and he's tossing good oil every 2,000 miles early. I get it, old habits die hard, but today's oils and filters hold up way past that, and he's burning money for nothing. Curious what interval you all actually run on a healthy motor versus what you tell customers?
Remember when we all thought 3k was gospel? I used to be that guy too, dumping perfectly good oil because my grandpa swore by it, so I get the dad habit thing. Take this with a grain of salt since I'm just a shadetree type, but on my own truck I run synthetic to about 7,500 and send a sample to a lab once in a while to be sure. For customers I usually say follow the manual, which is often 5k to 7.5k on newer stuff, and check the level between changes. Your mileage may vary with short trips and cold weather, but on a highway motor that guy is just lighting money on fire.
