Finally got that old Detroit 60 series to stop smoking after 2 years of tinkering

I bought a 2003 Freightliner last year with a 60 series that would blow blue smoke like crazy under load. After swapping injectors, checking turbos, and pulling my hair out, it turned out to be a cracked air crossover pipe behind the intake manifold. Has anyone else had a smoke issue that ended up being something simple like that?

I used to be the guy who would immediately blame injectors or the turbo on a 60 series. But after chasing a smoke issue on my 2002 Columbia for almost a year, it turned out to be a tiny pinhole in the charge air cooler that only showed up at full boost. That crossover pipe thing is exactly the kind of stupid simple fix that makes you feel like an idiot for not checking first. Changed my whole approach to diagnosing these motors.

$10 says you found a whole 6 inches of RTV holding that crossover together from the last guy. Classic Detroit stuff, I swear they smoke just to mess with us.

Nah, sometimes it's just a crusty old gasket that gave up.
